Frye will start in Cincinnati
December 7, 2005
Charlie Frye will be the Browns' starting quarterback Sunday in Cincinnati.
Romeo Crennel made the announcement to the team and the media Wednesday
morning. Crennel had previously said the starting quarterback would be
a game-time decision.
"It's probably unfair to both guys to wait," Crennel said.
Frye made his starting debut last week, completing 13-of-20 passes
for 226 yards and two touchdowns. A knee injury suffered by Trent
Dilfer the previous week opened the door for Frye, who found out the
day before the game he would get the start.
This week, he'll have three full days of practice to prepare as the starter.
"It ends up being another test for Charlie," Crennel said. "He knows
he's the starter early in the week. Everybody else knows he's the
starter early in the week. We'll see how he handles the situation."
"I don't if (knowing) makes it any easier," Frye said. "But going
into the game I know what's going on. This is how I prepare every week,
so that doesn't change.
"We'll go into the game the same way we've been going in."
Crennel said he informed Dilfer of his decision Tuesday night.
"I'm disappointed," Dilfer said. "As a competitor you always want to
play and have the ball in your hand. But that's not the way it is. My
role changes but not my commitment to this team.
Crennel said Dilfer would be limited in practice Wednesday as his he
continues to battle the knee injury. He's expected to be ready if
called upon Sunday.
"I'll still prepare like I always have," Dilfer said. "And I'll be ready to play on a moment's notice."
